There is a certain kind of object that resists being replaced. Not because nothing better has come along, but because it has done something rarer — it has become yours. Softened in the right places, worn smooth where your hand always reaches, carrying in its leather the quiet record of everywhere it has been.

HOBO makes those bags. And they have been doing it, with intention, since 1991.

A Brand Born from a Dining Room Table

HOBO was founded in 1991 after Toni Ray cashed in her life savings to fulfill her lifelong passion for leatherwork and start her own accessories brand. Her daughter Koren Ray joined her, and together they began crafting and selling genuine leather bags from the family home in Annapolis, Maryland. The first designs were sketched on the dining room table, and the bags were crafted in a small family factory in Bogotá, Colombia.

Koren met David Brewer — the person who became both her partner in HOBO and in life — and the two built the brand around a shared love of music and a belief that the most important thing in life is to find good people to take the journey with.

More than thirty years later, HOBO is still female-founded, still family-run, and still making leather goods the same way they always have — with quality that compounds over time.

Why They’re Called HOBO

The name is not accidental. HOBO was inspired by the original American hobos who traveled out of necessity for work and shared a value system based on kindness, responsibility, and hard work. That code — live with integrity, design with purpose, perfect it today and better it tomorrow — runs through everything the brand does. It is not a marketing tagline. It is the operating system.

Koren’s mother taught her to live with integrity and design with purpose. That inheritance shows up in every bag: in the quality of the leather, in the thoughtfulness of the pockets, in the conviction that when you stop worrying about the thing holding all your things, you are free to reach for more.

The Philosophy: Made to Last, Made to Be Loved

What separates HOBO from the vast majority of the accessories market is a commitment that sounds simple and is actually quite demanding: leather goods that only get better with use.

Most bags are designed to look their best on the shelf. HOBO bags are designed to look their best after years of use — softening, developing patina, becoming more themselves the longer they are carried. As Koren puts it: we are drawn to the broken-in, the well-loved, the familiar. There is a certain comfort and beauty to possessions that carry our history and have that beautiful character.

This is not a brand chasing trends. HOBO stays tuned in to what is happening in the market, but spends more time finding the brand’s own expression and filling in what is missing in the marketplace. Color, texture, and self-expression are the tools — not the season’s it-bag silhouette.

What HOBO Makes

HOBO‘s range is anchored in leather handbags and wallets, designed for the full range of everyday life — from the bag you carry to work to the wallet you’ve had for a decade and refuse to replace.

Handbags

Crossbodies, satchels, totes, shoulder bags, and frame bags in a wide range of silhouettes and leathers. Each style is designed to work hard and look better with time.

Wallets and accessories

Including the Lauren Clutch-Wallet, HOBO’s most collected and coveted style, designed after one too many wallet explosions in the checkout lane. It has changed the lives of over 1.5 million women.

Nylon collection

After 30 years of designing leather goods, HOBO launched a collection of nylon-based bags to help you go from Zumba to Zoom, from vacation to staycation.

HOBO Vintage

Aresale platform for gently used HOBO pieces, allowing bags to find second lives and new owners. Sustainability built into the model, not bolted on.

A Bag for Every Version of You

One of the things that makes HOBO genuinely useful rather than just beautiful is the range. Silhouettes that work as crossbodies, shoulder bags, or top-handle satchels depending on how you wear the strap. Sizes from compact and evening-ready to roomy enough for a full day out. Materials from polished and structured to soft suede and woven straw. Colors from quiet neutrals to the kind of warm, considered brights that make you reach for a bag over an outfit.

This is a brand that works for the working mom and the college student, the weekend errand run and the dinner out, the travel day and the farmers market Sunday. Not because it is all things to all people — but because it was designed with enough range and intention to meet you wherever you are.

The brand releases new styles monthly, which means there is always something new to discover without the brand ever feeling like it is chasing novelty for its own sake.

Something New, Every Month

HOBO releases new styles on a monthly basis — which means there is always a reason to check back in. The drops are considered rather than constant, adding to a growing archive of styles rather than chasing volume. New arrivals sell out quickly, particularly within the Alba Frame collection, so if something catches your eye it is worth moving on.

HOBO Vintage: The Circular Way to Shop

For those who love the brand and want to shop more sustainably — or who are ready to pass a well-loved piece along — HOBO Vintage is the brand’s own resale platform. Shop gently used HOBO bags at reduced prices, or sell your own back into the community. It is a rare thing for a brand to build the second life of its products directly into its model, and it speaks to exactly what HOBO has always believed: these bags are made to outlast their first owner.

What We’re Loving Right Now

The Sheila Medium Satchel (in our rotation)

We have been reaching for this one every day since it arrived. The Sheila Medium earns its place quietly — not through novelty but through how well it works. Soft leather with a subtle sheen, dark brown contrast stitching that adds dimension to the sleek black exterior, and brushed antique brass hardware that makes opening it feel like a small luxury.

Our Take

The interior is deeper than it looks. Currently in ours: a camera, lipstick, blush, phone, sunglasses, reading glasses, a notebook, a full makeup bag, and a pen — with room to spare. Everything has a place, nothing gets lost, and the signature back pocket means your phone is always one reach away. Wear it as a crossbody, a shoulder bag, or by the top handle depending on the vibe. It works with everything.

The Specs

  • 11″ W x 9.5″ H x 4.5″ D
  • 13″–24″ adjustable strap drop
  • Brushed antique brass hardware
  • Butterrum lining
  • Interior: 2 front slip pockets, back zip pocket, slip pocket & pen pocket
  • Exterior: signature phone pocket
  • Top zip closure
  • Fits phone and most tablets

The Sadie Satchel

Sadie is an east-west satchel in a league of her own — sleek, spacious, and effortlessly cool, with an elongated silhouette that transitions seamlessly from morning coffee runs to evening plans. Available in suede and pebbled leather, she is the kind of bag that works harder than she looks.

The Madison Shoulder Bag

Polished leather, hidden magnet closure, and a back slip pocket that keeps your phone exactly where you need it. Madison is the shoulder bag that makes a simple outfit feel considered — structured enough to stand out, easy enough to reach for every day.

The Alba Frame Collection

Cool is when vintage meets modern — and that is exactly what the Alba delivers. A vintage-inspired frame design that has quickly become one of HOBO’s most sought-after styles, with several colorways already selling out. The Alba Crossbody is available in polished leather and metallic leather — structured enough to feel intentional, relaxed enough to carry anywhere. If you have been watching this one, now is the time.

The Scottie Satchel

Petite and polished, Scottie packs a lot of personality into a compact east-west silhouette. Crafted in polished leather with a top zip closure, interior zip pocket, and solid leather double straps — she is the finishing touch that pulls an outfit together without trying too hard.

The Lauren Clutch-Wallet

The one that built a million loyalists. A vintage-inspired double frame design that holds everything and transforms effortlessly from wallet to clutch. Cards, cash, phone, ID — all of it organized, in something beautiful. The piece people come back to buy for their daughters.
