Smart-home technology has transformed almost everything inside our homes, from lighting and thermostats to security and appliances. Irrigreen is bringing that same kind of intelligence outside, rethinking something that has remained relatively unchanged for decades: the lawn sprinkler.

Traditional irrigation systems typically rely on multiple sprinkler heads spraying in fixed arcs or circles. To cover an entire lawn, those patterns have to overlap, which can mean watering the same area multiple times while also spraying sidewalks, driveways, patios and other places that don’t need water.

Irrigreen takes a fundamentally different approach.

The smart irrigation system digitally maps the actual shape of your lawn. Its sprinkler heads then dynamically change how far they spray as they rotate, following those boundaries rather than simply watering a predetermined circle.

The result is a system designed to put water where your landscape actually needs it—and much less where it doesn’t.

And that’s what makes Irrigreen interesting. This isn’t simply a traditional sprinkler system with an app attached to it. The technology changes the mechanics of how the lawn itself is watered.

How Does Irrigreen Work?

During setup, the boundaries of each watering zone are mapped through the Irrigreen app.

Once the system understands the shape of the area, its digital sprinkler heads use that information to control the distance of the water as they rotate. Instead of producing the same radius in every direction, the spray can extend farther in one direction and become shorter in another.

Think of it almost like drawing the outline of your lawn and asking the sprinkler to color inside the lines.

Each Irrigreen head uses multiple streams of water and continuously adjusts their distance throughout its rotation. Irrigreen says a single digital sprinkler can cover up to 2,800 square feet and replace approximately 6–10 conventional sprinkler heads, depending on the landscape and installation.

What Are the Benefits of Irrigreen?

It Can Significantly Reduce Water Waste

Water efficiency is probably the biggest reason Irrigreen has attracted attention.

Traditional sprinkler layouts often require overlapping spray patterns to achieve consistent coverage. Overspray can also send water onto driveways, sidewalks and other hard surfaces.

By digitally controlling the shape of its watering pattern, Irrigreen aims to eliminate much of that unnecessary overlap. The company says its system can use up to 50% less water compared with traditional irrigation systems.

Of course, actual savings will depend on factors such as your existing irrigation system, lawn shape, climate, watering schedule and installation. But the underlying idea is compelling: greater precision means less water going somewhere it isn’t needed.

It Can Follow Irregular Lawn Shapes

Most lawns aren’t perfect circles.

There are curved garden beds, narrow strips of grass, pathways, pools, patios, driveways and landscaping to navigate. That’s where conventional fixed-radius sprinklers can become inefficient.

Irrigreen’s digitally controlled spray distance allows the watering pattern to follow more complicated boundaries.

For homeowners with unusually shaped lawns, that precision may be one of the system’s most useful features.

It Uses Far Fewer Sprinkler Heads

A conventional irrigation system can require a surprisingly large network of sprinkler heads to achieve complete coverage.

Irrigreen says one digital head can replace approximately 6–10 traditional sprinkler heads, with individual heads capable of covering up to 2,800 square feet.

That potentially means fewer sprinkler heads scattered around the lawn and fewer individual components underground.

And aesthetically, there’s something appealing about simplifying all that infrastructure.

There’s Much Less Underground Plumbing

The difference isn’t limited to what you see above ground.

Traditional sprinkler installations can involve extensive networks of pipes connecting individual sprinkler heads and zones. Installing one can mean digging numerous trenches across the yard.

Because Irrigreen can cover larger areas with fewer heads, the company says its installations can require up to 80% less piping than conventional systems.

That can mean substantially less trenching—particularly appealing if you’re installing irrigation into an already established landscape that you don’t want completely dug up.

It Adjusts Watering Based on the Weather

The “smart” part extends beyond controlling the sprinkler heads.

Irrigreen incorporates weather-aware scheduling that can automatically adjust irrigation according to changing conditions rather than blindly running the same program every week.

That’s important because efficient irrigation isn’t only about where you water. It’s also about when and how much you water.

A sophisticated irrigation system shouldn’t need to water a lawn the same way after significant rainfall as it would during a prolonged hot, dry period.

Everything Can Be Controlled Through the Irrigreen App

Irrigreen’s mobile app acts as the control center for the entire irrigation system. Homeowners can use it to map watering zones, create schedules and make adjustments without relying on a traditional irrigation controller tucked away in a garage or utility room.

The app also plays a much bigger role than simply offering remote controls. It’s where the digital boundaries of the lawn are created and adjusted, giving each Irrigreen sprinkler the information it needs to determine where water should—and shouldn’t—go. If the landscape changes over time, those boundaries can be updated through the app rather than requiring an entirely new sprinkler layout.

The Watering Pattern Is Designed to Feel More Like Rain

Irrigreen also takes a different approach to how water is delivered across the lawn. Each digital sprinkler head uses 16 individual streams that rotate while continuously adjusting their reach, rather than relying on a single fixed spray pattern.

Irrigreen describes this approach as producing a more rain-like application of water, with the goal of helping water soak into the soil while reducing pooling and runoff. That’s particularly important when soil can’t absorb water as quickly as a sprinkler delivers it, since excess water may collect on the surface or flow away instead of reaching the lawn’s root zone.

Irrigreen Is Expanding Beyond the Lawn

Irrigreen is also extending its smart irrigation technology beyond grass with its Smart Drip System, developed in partnership with Netafim. The system is intended for landscaping such as garden beds, shrubs and trees, where targeted drip irrigation can make more sense than overhead sprinklers.

At the center of the system is Irrigreen’s Smart Valve, which monitors both water pressure and flow. By tracking those conditions, the system can detect abnormal behavior that may indicate problems such as a leak or clogged emitter, adding another layer of monitoring to areas of the landscape that can otherwise be difficult to keep an eye on.

The larger advantage is that Irrigreen can bring lawn sprinklers and drip irrigation into the same connected system. Rather than using one controller for the grass and a separate setup for garden beds and other landscaping, homeowners can manage both through the Irrigreen app, creating a more unified approach to outdoor watering.

So, What Makes Irrigreen Different From a Regular Smart Sprinkler Controller?

This is probably the most important distinction.

There are already plenty of smart irrigation controllers that allow you to control a conventional sprinkler system from your phone or adjust schedules according to the weather.

Irrigreen goes further because it changes the sprinkler itself.

A smart controller can make a conventional irrigation system more intelligent, but the sprinkler heads underneath it are generally still producing traditional fixed watering patterns.

Irrigreen combines software, mapping and digitally controlled sprinkler heads so that the physical shape of the watering pattern changes according to the landscape.

That’s what makes the concept feel much more like a genuine redesign of residential irrigation rather than simply another connected-home accessory.

Is Irrigreen Worth Knowing About?

If you already have a perfectly functioning irrigation system and relatively low water costs, completely replacing it may not necessarily make sense purely for the novelty of controlling sprinklers from your phone.

But that’s also not really the most interesting use case.

For someone installing a new irrigation system, renovating a landscape, dealing with an unusually shaped lawn or trying to substantially reduce outdoor water use, Irrigreen presents an interesting alternative to the conventional approach.

The big idea is surprisingly simple: instead of designing your lawn’s irrigation around the limitations of sprinkler heads, design the sprinkler’s watering pattern around the lawn.

And considering how much technology has changed inside our homes, it’s interesting to see the same thinking finally being applied to something as ordinary—and potentially wasteful—as watering the grass.
